AS LONG AS I CYCLE
EEN ONTWERP VOOR VEILIG GEDRAG
CYCLING SAFETY FOR SENIOR CITIZENS
Objective: The goal of the project is to develop a pilot intervention geared towards encouraging traffic safety among elderly cyclists. In this case, it involves developing an approach focusing on what elderly cyclists can do themselves to travel safely by bicycle. This intervention is being developed at the request of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, in collaboration with the cities of Amersfoort and Dronten.
Traffic Safety policy stimulus
With the Traffic Safety policy stimulus (2012), the Ministry aims to reduce the number of traffic fatalities and injuries in the Netherlands by 2020 through a package of policy measures. As part of this policy stimulus, it has been agreed that all municipal governments will draw up a local approach for improving cycling safety. As part of their local approaches, the cities of Amersfoort and Dronten want to implement a pilot project to test a set of measures geared towards promoting bicycle safety among senior citizens. Elderly people are an important target group, because they are relatively more likely to be involved in a bicycle accident.
Team of behavioural experts & service designers
At the initiative of Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, an interdisciplinary team of behavioural experts and service designers has been assembled to conduct this research project. Researchers from PubLab work together with the bureau Ideate and U CREATE (Centre of Expertise Creative Industries). In the design process and the realisation of the interventions, the researchers have sought the collaboration of local stakeholders; parties that have an influence on elderly cyclists in Amersfoort and Dronten.
To develop an insight into the palette of options for effective interventions;
To gain insight into the possible stakeholders who may be able to play a role in the implementation of the intervention;
To gain insight into the opportunities available for actually reaching and motivating the elderly cyclist;
To apply an intervention into a set of practically feasible measures using the mechanisms tested under real-world conditions.
An evaluation of the pilot project in the form of a process description, cost-effectiveness, and impact;
A practical and accessible manual to use as a guide for other municipalities to set up and implement a similar project.
